Frequently Asked Questions

Can you tell me about your program?
Welcome to The Dance Floor at Hiland!  We offer a variety of classes, including Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Lyrical, Hip Hop, Pointe, and Baton for dancers aged 2 and up. We also have an adult class and a boys class!

 

Does my dancer have to live in a specific area to participate in your program?

That's what so great about our program, you don't have to live in a particular school district to participate. We accept dancers from all areas!

Is registration open?

Registration is currently closed for the 2024-2025 dance year.

How long is the dance year?

The dance year is typically September to May. In May, we will have a recital to show off all the moves that we have learned all year. All dancers who are signed up for classes are expected to participate in the recital and finale.

What is the cost of tuition?

We strive to keep our prices low so we can accommodate everyone at The Dance Floor at Hiland! Our 2024-2025 prices are as follows:​

  • One 30 minute class (Grades 1+) - $22 per month per dancer

  • One Preschool or Tiny Tots class - $22 per month per dancer

  • One Pre-K class - $28 per month per dancer

  • One Kindergarten class - $36 per month per dancer

  • One Boys class (Grades 1st-6th) - $36 per month per dancer

  • One Adult class - $28 per month per dancer

  • One time non refundable registration fee - $30 per dancer

How long are your classes?

The length of each class depends on our schedule and class options. Please check out our schedule for the most up to date information.

 

Where do you practice?

Hiland Presbyterian Church in the North Hills - 845 Perry Highway, Pittsburgh, PA 15229.

What should my dancer wear to class?

Tiny Tots, Preschool, Pre-K and Kindergarten dancers should all be dressed in leotards and tights. Whatever color your dancer loves, is a perfect color for their tights and leotards. 

 

Dancers first grade through fifth grade is required to wear leotards to class. Dancer's may wear dance skirts, form fitted shorts or bike shorts, or leggings over top if they wish.

Sixth graders and above are permitted to wear any type of FORM-FITTING clothing (leotards and tights, tanks, shorts, leggings).

 

All of our boys should be dressed in a comfortable shirt and shorts/pants.

 

Nothing baggy. NO jeans, sweatpants, basketball shorts, hoodies, pajamas, baggy clothes, flip flops or boots!

What does your adult class include?

Our adult class is a combination class of many types of dances. Our adult class is a 45-minute class where we will cover basics and techniques to start. You do not have to have any prior experience of dance to take this class. You will also enjoy starting to dance again if you are a dancer!

What kind of shoes does my dancer need?

Tiny Tots and Preschool - white ballet shoes

Pre-K and Kindergarten - white ballet and black tap shoes


First grade through fifth grade:

Tap - tan Mary Jane style with buckle

Ballet - white ballet shoes

Jazz - tan jazz slip-ons

Hip Hop - jazz or ballet shoes are okay for class. For the recital, dancers will wear black tennis shoes

Baton - jazz or a clean pair of tennis shoes for class. For the recital, dancers will be bare foot.

 

Sixth grade through twelfth grade:

Tap - black Mary Jane style with buckle

Ballet- half soles

Jazz - tan jazz slip-ons

Lyrical - half soles

Baton - jazz or a clean pair of tennis shoes for class. For the recital, dancers will be bare foot.

Hip Hop - jazz or ballet shoes for class. For the recital, dancers will wear black tennis shoes

Pointe - Pointe shoes are required.

Pre-Pointe - half soles through December, pointe shoes will be required in January.

ALL BOYS will wear black tap, black jazz and/or black ballet shoes.

 

Adult class - a pair a jazz tennis shoe or clean pair of tennis shoes

BATON! Where do I get a baton, what size, and does s/he need it for the first class?

Brighton Music in North Hills, All That Jazz in Wexford and The Tight Spot in Brentwood sells batons. What size s/he needs depends on their arm length. Please call ahead to make sure you do not need an appointment. Take your dancer with you, they will measure her/his arm to ensure s/he has the proper fit! Your dancer should have a baton for their first class.

What happens when I cannot find the right clothing or shoes for my dancer?
Wearing the proper dance attire is essential for class so that your teachers can provide you with proper instruction AND for the safety of the dancer. We always want our dancers to be safe!

 

Should my dancer bring a water bottle to class?

YES! Please provide a water bottle your dancer is able to open and close on their own that does not leak. Make sure your dancers water bottle is labeled with their name! Please only send water with your dancers, we will not allow dancers to drink other beverages during class.

Why does my dancer have to take Jazz to take Hip Hop?

Technique and learning the basics are both still extremely important to be a great Hip Hop dancer. That is why all of our Hip Hop dancers must also enroll and participate in Jazz.


Does my dancer need to put their hair in a ponytail for class?
YES! All dancers with long enough hair, should have hair securely pulled back every week for class. Don't forget those hair ties!
